Mallow came through with an impressive win against Tipperary’s Carraig on Suir in Cashel to book a spot in the last eight of this year’s Junior B Inter club 4020 championship.
Mallow who dominated from the off started well when Ryan Harkin playing his first competitive game in quite a while took to the court. Ryan who had not been at his usual 100% came up against a well seasoned character in Davy Tobin, took a commanding lead in the first going up 7 aces at the start but from here on in things
turned as Ryan’s lack of competitive games showed however he stuck at it and won the first 21-12.The second was a different affair as Davy got off to a flying start leading 8-0.Ryan seemed under pressure as his normal array of shots were off target and hitting the floorboards. However he dug deep and towards the end when the writing seemed on the wall his natural ability and crack serving shone through pulling out a 21-15 victory.
Next up the newly formed partnership of Ken O’Neill and Darren Whelan took to the stage for Mallow against J.J Quinn & Paul Keane. Mallow dominated this match from start to finish through Ken’s power serving and Darren’s retrieving skills. Carraig on Suir unfortunately had no answer for the Mallow coupling losing the first 21-11 and the second 21-7.
Going in to the last Mallow now had a commanding lead of 39 aces and only needed 4 more aces from Ciaran Buckley to seal a victory. Ciaran facing a tough opponent in Anthony Robinson, never let him settle and right from the off with a 40ft left hand corner kill showed his intent.
From that splendid shot on Ciaran never relinquished his intent ratcheting up a well deserved victory for Mallow with a 21-4, 21-6 score line.
Mallow now has a quick turnaround and face Kerry’s Glenbeigh on Monday night in Galbally.
